Do you believe everything you are told?
Does it matter who it is that is telling it to you?
Whether it be a teacher, police officer or a doctor......
I am a believer in "gut feeling", "intuition", and above all else "SECOND OPINIONS"!
Case in point (whatever that means, just sounded good):
About 5 -6 weeks ago my Aunt (who shall remain nameless) slipped and fell on the ice. She was cleaning off the back of her van, getting ready to go to work. It was after that storm where it rained then froze then snowed on top of that. Anyway, her leg went out from under her and she landed in a bad way twisting her knee and groin. Thankfully she had her cell phone 'cause she wasn't making it into the house. Big Sister to the rescue!!! She was taken to the ER where the Doctors (who most likely are interns and don't know squat) examined her, took an xray of her knee and sent her on her way with pain meds and crutches. Check in with your primary they said, it's just a bad sprain they said, no need for further xrays they said......
Why didn't they xray my whole leg? Why didn't they xray my hip? I mean come on I fell, right? Still believing they knew what they were talking about right..... they are DOCTORS!! Can you see where I am leading yet???
After the initial shock, soreness and the ability to maneuver around on crutches was concord, the PT started. 3 weeks of PT and no changes? Why is it still hurting? Why can't I walk on my own yet? What the heck???? You need to get a second opinion!
Of course it wasn't the Primary Doctor who suggested this. My aunt called her and told her she was going to an Orthopedic Surgeon and to send in the referral to her insurance. It's funny how we make the decisions and THEY get paid the big bucks!
Anyway, GUESS WHAT..... Fractured hip!!!! Now if the ER docs had examined her more thoroughly 6 weeks ago it would have been a few PINS AND NEEDLES. Now it is a complete hip replacement! ALWAYS QUESTION YOUR GUT FEELING.
My Father has told me on more than one occasion: The only questions that are stupid are the ones that were never asked (or something like that!)
As of yesterday, the hip has been replaced and she is feeling better all ready! Go figure!
